Master Weaver Baskets

Throughout the year an eye is kept out for exceptional baskets being produced by the most talented weavers; an exceptional basket can be incredibly impressive in design, originality, or accuracy and attention to detail.
The baskets are then are assessed by a panel of judges – experts from within Tintsaba, plus esteemed guests from the regional design scene – and a Overall winner, plus a People's Choice, are chosen.
Not only does this give the weavers some healthy competition, but encourages them to continually develop their craft and be thinking of ways to move their designs forwards.

Many of the Tintsaba baskets on our site are from the Master Weaver's Collection.

Over the last 30 years Tintsaba has trained and worked with over 1000 women in rural Swaziland. Invoking the passion that the late founder Sheila Freemantle had, they are dedicated to creating the highest quality hand woven sisal products. The future for Tintsaba and Swazi women is one of independence, strength-of-self and to lead by example within their communities.

When Tintsaba was founded by Sheila in 1985, her focus was on how she could help the women of rural Swaziland take charge of their lives and become independent. Starting with only 12 local women, Sheila's guidance, dedication and innovativeness brought Tintsaba to what it is today. These qualities ushered Tintsaba in to becoming renowned for refined, high quality sisal basketry weaving, and has been recognised as an industry leader and awarded repeatedly over the years.

Since inception Tintsaba has endeavored to create a workplace that helps Swazi women grow and develop themselves, through various courses and workshops ranging in a variety of subjects such as leadership, skill-set development, training, environmental awareness and women's health. They pride themselves on encouraging an holistic approach to not only the work but also in their daily lives.
